TakeLessons Announces Sponsorship the International Women’s Hackathon at California State University, San Marcos

San Diego, CA (October 2, 2014) – TakeLessons is proud to announce its sponsorship of the Third International Women’s Hackathon, which will be held on October 11th, 2014 at California State University, San Marcos’ (CSUSM).

The International Women’s Hackathon seeks to encourage young women to pursue their interest and careers in computer science, even if they haven’t had prior programming experience. The event is open to female students over the age of 16. Participants will be broken into teams of 4-6 to design website, game, cloud based service, application, or mobile app to address one of these two world challenges: Disaster Response or Climate Data.

“TakeLessons is honored to sponsor CSUSM’s participation in the International Women’s Hackathon,” said Alan Cole, COO of TakeLessons. “It is vital that young women are provided the resources necessary to pursue careers in computer science and other innovation-related fields. We are thrilled that CSUSM is providing this opportunity to young women in the San Diego area, empowering them to take control of their futures.”

The San Diego community can support CSUSM’s participation in October 11th’s International Women’s Hackathon by being a mentor, judge, volunteer, or sponsoring the event. Young women and parents of young women interested in participating have until October 7th to register.

“The support from the community for young women has truly humbled me. We are so grateful to our volunteers, judges, and mentors who are ready to work with participants for a fun day of tackling real world problems,” said Dr. Youwen Ouyang, Professor of Computer Science at CSUSM. “We are especially grateful for the support from TakeLessons, which enabled us to explore transportation for girls from local high schools who may have otherwise missed this opportunity due to limit of their own resources.”
