The Orange County Register: Hot homes: Midcentury modern style – with a twist

by Marilyn Kalfus / Staff Writer

A midcentury modern style home rebuilt this year along the bluffs overlooking Newport Beach’s Back Bay offers features that designers working decades ago could only have imagined.

The Dover Shores house has solar paneling and tankless water heaters. The large gourmet kitchen includes sleek Dacor appliances and a sprawling center island with seating.

In the en suite master bathroom, the toilet raises its own lid as someone enters the compartment, where heated seating and other options await. A freestanding bathtub in a separate area is filled not from a spigot, but dramatically, from the ceiling.

The 3,909-square-foot home is for sale at $3.48 million. The house, including five bedrooms, a living room, den and dining room, surrounds a courtyard with a swimming pool.

The residence at 1958 Galaxy Drive was rebuilt by American Coastal Properties, which selects premium locations in high-end or popular neighborhoods in Southern California as the starting point to buy and rebuild or extensively remodel homes.

At the back of the property, a 180-degree view of the bay stretches to Newport Beach and beyond, taking in Saddleback Mountain.

Jason Harris of Coldwell Banker Previews International is the listing agent.
